Been wondering again about the consistently large gobs of hair in the shower drain catcher every day. Thinking about how many wigs I could make if I saved up over a few months, or even weeks.
And then, whilst parting my hair last night, I found….a BALD spot. Whoa, nellie. And then I found this wee tidbit online:
Yes. If you wear pigtails or cornrows or use tight hair rollers, the pull on your hair can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia (say: al-oh-pee-sha). If the pulling is stopped before scarring of the scalp develops, your hair will grow back normally. However, scarring can cause permanent hair loss. Hot oil hair treatments or chemicals used in permanents (also called “perms”) may cause inflammation (swelling) of the hair follicle, which can result in scarring and hair loss. ”“Can improper care of my hair cause hair loss?
Ack! I wear my hair up all the time! It’s not my fault! I can’t afford to get it cut right now! And now I have TRACTION ALOPECIA (say: fuh-ck-ee-ng-cuh-rap-ass)!
Aigoooooo-ah. Maybe I could save what falls out out, and make a wig of my own hair for myself.

Mine used to do that too! Want to know what I did? Do ya, huh?
I stopped using elastic thingies (which cause breakage) and started using barrettes instead. I also went to the doctor for a long-overdue (I’m talking like twelve years overdue) checkup and got my thyroid checked. It was low (hypo/hyper, whateve) and then POOF! Shiny , strong hair again! Still super-straight and fine, but still better than it was before.
Thanks, Pegg! Something has to be done, because, damn. My people do not look good bald, unless we’re playing the martial-arts villain in a Batman movie. Or maybe it’s just me who doesn’t look good bald, but really - how would I know? I’ve never been. Just an instinct I have.
